What is a Kei Truck?
A kei truck (軽トラック, pronounced “kay truck”) is a Japanese mini utility vehicle classified under Japan’s “Kei” (light) vehicle regulations. These regulations limit engine displacement to 660cc, body width to 1.48 meters, and power output to 47hp — resulting in compact, highly efficient utility vehicles that are perfect for agricultural, commercial, and off-road use.
Kei Truck Advantages for US Owners
American buyers choose kei trucks over UTVs, ATVs, and full-size trucks for several compelling reasons:
- ⛽ 40+ mpg — dramatically lower fuel costs than any US alternative
- 💰 Low purchase price — $7,000–$14,000 landed vs $20,000+ for US alternatives
- 📏 Compact size — fits through 8-foot gates, navigates tight spaces
- 🔧 Simple mechanics — straightforward to maintain and repair
- 🚛 Real payload — 1,500 lbs, far more than any UTV
- 🛣️ Street legal — drive on public roads (state-dependent)
