Japanese mini trucks are famous for their reliability — but like any vehicle, they reward regular maintenance. The good news: kei truck engines are simple, parts are affordable, and many jobs are DIY-friendly even for non-mechanics. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your truck running strong for 200,000 miles and beyond.
Routine Service Intervals
| Service Item | Interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Engine Oil & Filter | Every 3,000 miles or 6 months | Use 10W-30 or 5W-30 conventional |
| Air Filter | Every 15,000 miles | More often in dusty conditions |
| Spark Plugs | Every 15,000–20,000 miles | NGK is the OEM brand |
| Fuel Filter | Every 20,000 miles | Critical on carbureted models |
| Transmission Fluid | Every 30,000 miles | Check 4WD transfer case fluid too |
| CV Boots | Inspect every 15,000 miles | Replace at first sign of cracking |
| Timing Belt | Every 60,000 miles | Critical — don’t skip this one |
| Coolant Flush | Every 2 years | Use proper mix, never straight water |
| Brake Fluid | Every 2 years | Absorbs moisture over time |
The #1 Most Important Maintenance Item: CV Boots
CV (constant velocity) boots are the most commonly needed replacement part on kei trucks. They protect the CV joints from dirt and moisture. Once a boot tears, the joint will fail quickly — leading to a much more expensive repair. Inspect them at every oil change. Shop CV boots for all models here.
Carbureted vs Fuel-Injected: Different Maintenance Needs
Carbureted models (pre-1998): Carburetors need periodic cleaning and adjustment, especially if the truck sits unused. Use fresh fuel, keep the fuel filter clean, and consider a carb rebuild kit every few years.
EFI models (1998+): Much lower maintenance. Keep injectors clean with a quality fuel additive, replace the fuel filter on schedule, and check the O2 sensor every 30,000 miles.

4WD System Maintenance
If your truck has 4WD, engage it at least once a month even if you don’t need it — this keeps the seals lubricated and prevents the system from seizing up from disuse. Check the transfer case fluid level every 15,000 miles. On trucks with diff locks (Honda Acty Attack), test the lock engagement every few months.
Storage and Long-Term Care
If storing the truck for more than a month: add a fuel stabilizer, disconnect the battery or use a trickle charger, and leave it in a dry, sheltered location. Kei trucks are surprisingly corrosion-resistant due to their Japanese build quality, but keeping them dry extends their life significantly.
