How to Import a Kei Truck to the USA (2026 Guide)
Two options: (1) import yourself, or (2) buy from a US importer like JPM. Here’s the full process for both.
Option 1: DIY Direct Import (advanced)
Step 1: Verify 25-Year Eligibility
Your truck must be 25+ years old (2000 or older in 2026) to bypass FMVSS safety standards.
Step 2: Find a Truck at Japanese Auctions
USS, JU, HAA, Honda Auto Auction are the main sources. Most require a licensed buyer.
Step 3: Pay for Inspection + Auction Fees
$200-$500 for inspection + auction commission + Japan transportation to port.
Step 4: Ocean Shipping
RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) shipping: $800-$1,400 to West Coast US ports. Container: $1,800-$3,000.
Step 5: US Customs Clearance
- Submit DOT HS-7 form (“over 25 years old” exemption)
- Submit EPA 3520-1 form (same exemption)
- Pay 2.5% import duty + harbor fees
- Customs broker fee: $200-$500
Step 6: Truck to Your Door
From West Coast port to anywhere in US: $700-$1,800.
Step 7: State Registration
