How to Import a Kei Truck from Japan to the USA
Importing a Japanese Kei truck directly from Japan can save you thousands of dollars compared to buying from a US dealer. However, the process can seem daunting if you’ve never done it. This guide walks you through every step.

Step 1: Find Your Vehicle at a Japanese Auction
Japan has hundreds of auto auction houses β USS, TAA, JU, and more β where millions of vehicles are sold weekly. Graded on a scale of 1β5 (with 5 being near-perfect), auction grades help buyers assess condition remotely. At JPM Mini Trucks, we only source trucks graded 3.5 and above.
Step 2: Confirm the 25-Year Rule
For legal US import, the vehicle must be at least 25 years old (manufactured in 2001 or earlier for 2026 imports). The EPA and NHTSA both recognize this exemption. Always verify manufacture date with the auction sheet.
Step 3: Payment and Export Documentation
After winning an auction, payment is made to the auction house (typically in Japanese Yen). Export documentation includes a Japanese export certificate, de-registration certificate (Yushutsu Todokede), and bill of lading.
Step 4: Ocean Freight to the USA
Trucks are shipped via RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) container. Transit time from Japan to US West Coast ports is approximately 2β3 weeks; East Coast ports take 4β6 weeks. JPM Mini Trucks handles all freight logistics.

Step 5: US Customs Clearance
At port, a licensed customs broker files the entry documents. You’ll pay approximately 2.5% import duty on the declared value. JPM handles this process on your behalf.
Step 6: Title and Registration
After customs clearance, you’ll receive the Japanese export title. Many states can register these vehicles directly from this documentation. JPM provides full guidance on your state’s specific process.
Total Landed Costs (2026)
Auction price + shipping (~$2,500β$3,500) + customs (2.5%) + port fees (~$400) + domestic transport = typical landed cost of $7,000β$14,000 depending on the vehicle.
